What Fight Back to School Is About
A police officer from a special duties unit is disciplined for insubordination and sent undercover into a secondary school as a student, ostensibly to find a missing gun. Stephen Chow refuses to take the premise seriously and sabotages it in every scene: the man is thirty, he is sitting in a classroom, nobody believes it and the film does not ask you to. Directed by Gordon Chan, it is a typical product of Hong Kong's fast comedy output in the nineties, running mostly on wordplay and situation. Chow's absurdist style, known as mo lei tau, is fully formed here. It was a large hit and produced two sequels. Who it is for: viewers who enjoy Hong Kong comedy and Chow's particular register. Who it is not for: anyone frustrated by humour built on wordplay that does not survive subtitles.
