What The Merciless Is About

Two men meet in prison: Jae-ho, experienced and aiming for the top of his organisation, and Hyun-su, ambitious and newly arrived. Jae-ho comes to trust him, and once out they set about taking over the gang together; but both are carrying calculations they have not declared, and the film jumps back and forth in time to open them up piece by piece. It takes the familiar Korean crime template and rebuilds it around trust and betrayal between two men. The violence is hard and detailed, and the ending forgives nobody.
