Whatcha Wearin'?

Yoon-jung, newly single, gets a late-night call from a wrong number: the man on the other end is trying to talk to someone he thinks is his ex. The conversation somehow continues, and two strangers begin meeting on the phone every night without ever seeing each other. Byun Sung-hyun directed. Kim Ah-joong plays Yoon-jung, Ji Sung plays Hyun-seung. The whole film rests on a relationship built by voice, which gives the romantic comedy template an unexpected distance: the characters know each other before they see each other. Explicit talk is the engine, but the subject is loneliness; both tell a stranger at night what they can say to nobody in daylight. It was unusually frank for a Korean romantic comedy and was discussed on those grounds when it opened. Byun Sung-hyun went on to make far harder crime films; here the comic side leads. Who it is for: viewers who like romantic comedy built on conversation. Who it is not for: anyone uncomfortable with frank sexual humour.
