What Filthy Is About
Lena is seventeen, from a middle-class family, in the middle of a first love: slipping out at night, walking along the Danube in the mornings. Then she is raped and all of that stops. She cannot tell anyone, she closes up, she harms herself. Her family, with no idea what to do, has her admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Tereza Nvotová's 2017 Slovak film is about the aftermath rather than the event: what silence costs, how institutions fail to help, how the people around a girl question her first. It disturbs through quiet rather than through anything shown. Dominika Morávková plays her entirely from within.
