Final Destination

James Wong’s film follows a student who sees a crash before boarding and the six people taken off with him. It began as an X-Files spec Jeffrey Reddick wrote to land a television agent. In the treatment that reached New Line, Death was a hooded figure with a scythe. Wong and Glen Morgan cut it, reasoning there were already too many Freddys and Jasons. What remains has no antagonist to look at: the suspense goes entirely to inanimate objects, and what looks lethal is usually not what kills. The main titles, by Goodspot, work the same way. Books topple to uncover Death of a Salesman, a travel guide falls open on French Revolution torture, so on a second viewing those minutes read as a list. The cabin was a real set on a gimbal, redressed later as the attic. The scripted ending failed with preview audiences and the Paris finale was shot instead; versions where Alex dies survive as home video alternates. The John Denver songs are a deliberate joke: Denver died in a plane crash in 1997. A good fit if you prefer a threat never given a body, spread across a kitchen counter instead. Not for anyone who needs someone to hold on to: after Scream the cast was rewritten as teenagers and stays thin beside the machinery.
