Final Destination Bloodlines

Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein won the job from over two hundred candidates with a fake accident cut from existing footage. It is the first entry since the fifth film in 2011. The prologue, at the opening of a tower restaurant in the late 1960s, carries one real change: the disaster is not survived, it is foreseen and stopped. The debt the rescued never paid passes to their grandchildren, and the order is written in a notebook. The opening took over a year and six sets, one a concrete structure poured so it could burn and explode safely. For the MRI scene a double decker platform went inside the machine, what the directors call a magician’s contraption. It is the last film of Tony Todd, who played William Bludworth and died of stomach cancer in November 2024. The script ended his scene when the character turns in the doorway; the closing lines are his own words. Lipovsky recalls how weak he had become and how he was relishing the day anyway. The film was nominated as best horror picture at the 53rd Saturn Awards. A good fit if you accept a horror film stopping to let an actor say goodbye. Not for anyone who thinks announcing the order kills the suspense, since the notebook says who goes and when.
