I Am Frankelda

In mid-nineteenth-century Mexico, Francisca Imelda wants to be a writer, but nobody takes a woman writing horror seriously. One day a prince from another world appears and tells her he needs her help to save his kingdom. Arturo and Roy Ambriz made the film entirely in stop motion, and it is the first full stop-motion feature produced in Mexico. It tells what came before the Frankelda series the brothers made for HBO Max in 2021. Guillermo del Toro came on as a mentor. It opened the festival in Guadalajara, went to Annecy, and Netflix took international distribution. Who it is for: viewers who like stop-motion animation and gothic tales. Who it is not for: anyone planning to watch with small children, since the tone is dark.
