What Finn Is About
In Frans Weisz’s 2013 Dutch film, nine-year-old Finn lives with his father in a small town. He plays football with his friend Erik because that is what boys his age do, but what he wants is music, and his father will not discuss why the subject is closed. When Finn comes across an old man playing the violin, he starts taking lessons in secret while his father assumes he is at practice. It looks like a straightforward children’s picture and is heavier underneath: working out why music is forbidden in a house means working out what that house has been carrying quietly. Weisz keeps the tone gentle without pretending the answer is simple, and Mels van der Hoeven holds the film together.
