What Fish Out of Water Is About
At the start of the nineties three hundred thousand people in Denmark are out of work. Viggo, a machinist, is a man who never speaks of his feelings, is loud about the union, keeps an eye on his aquarium fish and argues at the dinner table; his wife Oda puts up with his moods. When he is laid off he neither looks for work nor can stay at home; he starts a garden, takes up with a well-off and unhappy widow, and lies to his wife about union training so as to go away with her. When the woman ends the affair, Viggo collapses. Erik Clausen’s ninety seven minute Danish film tells unemployment mixed with comedy; the director also plays the lead.
