What Flash Gordon Is About
Scientists discover that a planet called Mongo is heading straight for Earth and there is little time left. Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Doctor Zarkov take a rocket there. On Mongo they find Ming, the emperor who rules it, and learn that the collision is no accident but his own design. Before Flash can get home he has to deal with monsters in an arena, an undersea kingdom, a race of winged men, and Ming's daughter. Frederick Stephani directed what is really a thirteen-chapter serial, running well over four hours in total. Buster Crabbe plays Flash and Charles Middleton plays Ming. It is adapted from Alex Raymond's comic strip, and its mark on later science fiction cinema is direct.
