What Flaxy Martin Is About
The lawyer Walter Colby works with the mob and has begun to regret those ties. When his girlfriend, the showgirl Flaxy Martin, who has shady connections of her own, becomes a suspect in a murder, Walter takes the charge on himself. He escapes on the way to prison and sets out to find the real killer, and in doing so has to learn why the people on his own side were willing to write him off. Richard L. Bare’s Warner production uses the familiar shapes of noir: a lying witness, a wrongful conviction, a jump from a train and a reckoning at the end. Virginia Mayo plays Flaxy and Zachary Scott plays Walter, with Dorothy Malone in the cast. The film runs eighty-six minutes and dates from 1949.
