Flight Crew

Gushchin, a young pilot, is thrown out of military aviation for disobeying an order and starts flying for a civil airline under a captain who despises anyone who departs from the rules. Then a volcano erupts on a Pacific island and, on the runway they reach for the evacuation, the only way to save the passengers of two aircraft is a manoeuvre that is impossible on paper. Nikolay Lebedev's film was presented as a remake of the 1979 Soviet Air Crew, but what the two share amounts to the title and a disaster that keeps escalating. Vladimir Mashkov plays the captain and Danila Kozlovsky the young pilot. The visual effects work counted as a leap within its own industry and it was among the most discussed Russian productions of 2016. Who it is for: viewers who like disaster films and flying sequences. Who it is not for: anyone expecting fine character work, since the film does its real work with the volcano.
