What Flight of the Red Balloon Is About

Simon lives with his mother Suzanne in a cramped Paris flat. Suzanne does voices for a puppet theatre, argues with the tenant downstairs and with the man she separated from, and never quite has the time her son needs. She hires Song, a Chinese film student, to look after him. A red balloon drifts through the whole film behind the boy, at windows, above metro exits. This is Hou Hsiao-hsien's first film made outside Asia, produced for the Musée d'Orsay and offered as a salute to Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short The Red Balloon. Juliette Binoche plays Suzanne.
