What Fog in August Is About
A boy is placed in a mental hospital and works out that the children there are being killed quietly: starvation diets, injections, falsified death certificates. This was a real life. Ernst Lossa was a Yenish boy, and that identity was part of why he was locked up, which most summaries leave out. He tries to protect his friends and to break the machinery. The Nazi euthanasia programme continued quietly in the hospitals after it was officially stopped in 1941, and thousands of children died in that second phase. The film tells that silence at a child's height, without raising its voice.
