What Hilde Is About
The film opens in 1966 with Hildegard Knef returning to Berlin and preparing for a concert, and from there goes back to 1943. Knef, who began acting at seventeen, spent the war years in Germany, had a relationship with a Nazi at the head of the country’s film administration and saw the fall of the city from inside. After the war she becomes one of Germany’s best known stars, goes to America, then builds a second life as a singer and writes her book. Kai Wessel’s hundred and thirty seven minute German film draws on Der geschenkte Gaul, which Knef wrote at the end of the sixties. Heike Makatsch plays Knef, with Dan Stevens, Monica Bleibtreu and Hanns Zischler in the cast. It opened on 12 March 2009.
