For a Woman

After her mother dies, Anne comes across an old photograph in the family house. The man in it is an uncle who stayed with her parents for a while after the war, and nobody ever mentioned him. The further she follows him, the less the account she was given of her own birth holds together. The photograph opens onto postwar France, onto the communist past of an immigrant Jewish family, and onto a short, enormous love affair of her mother's. Diane Kurys draws on her own family history here. Benoît Magimel, Mélanie Thierry and Nicolas Duvauchelle play the leads. Kurys runs the daughter investigating the past and the past itself side by side on two separate timelines.
