What Love Is All You Need Is About

A hairdresser who has just finished cancer treatment travels to Italy for her daughter's wedding and meets the groom's cold, angry father. Susanne Bier uses the romantic comedy shape without supplying its usual lightness: most of these people arrive carrying a loss, and the wedding preparations expose that rather than covering it. Trine Dyrholm holds the balance, because the character is never presented as pitiable. The Italian landscape is used like a postcard, and the contrast is deliberate. The destination is predictable and the film does not pretend otherwise; what interests it is how tired everyone is on the way there.
