Frantz Fanon: Black Skin, White Mask

Frantz Fanon was born in Martinique. He was educated in Paris and worked in Algeria. He was both a doctor and a theorist. He wrote about identity and about race. He took part in the anti colonial struggle in Algeria. The documentary takes the life and the thought together. It is not a straightforward documentary. Reenactments, archive footage and interviews are woven into each other. Colin Salmon plays Fanon in the staged scenes. People from his family and from the academy speak. Françoise Vergès places his thinking in his own time. The film sets out to show both his originality and his contradictions. Isaac Julien fits all of it into seventy minutes. Colin Salmon and Françoise Vergès appear in the seventy minute documentary, a British production Julien finished in 1996.
