What Derek Is About
The documentary records in order the life and work of the filmmaker Derek Jarman, putting his humour and his way of being an artist at the centre. It was made by Isaac Julien with Tilda Swinton, and its narration is built on their own personal relationship with him. The account does not give a lesson in art history; it places archive footage, interviews and passages from Jarman’s own films side by side. His way of working, his making things with limited means and his stubbornness come forward. The film presents its subject as neither a victim nor a legend. Through its seventy six minutes the tone stays personal. The British documentary by Isaac Julien and Bernard Rose was completed in 2008.
