What Franz + Polina Is About
In 1943 an SS unit is billeted in a Belarusian village. Franz, a young soldier, grows close to Polina, the daughter of the house where he is staying, and then the order comes to burn the village. Franz refuses, kills his commander and runs with her while everyone else is killed. Mikhail Segal made the film from The Mute, a novella by the Belarusian writer Ales Adamovich, working from the screenplay Adamovich himself wrote in 1993. The burning of Belarusian villages and the killing of their people is not invention but what happened in that war. The film does not put it in the background; it stays underneath the love story throughout.
