A young writer leaves a collection of short stories at a large Moscow publishing house. Nobody publishes the book, but the manuscript stays in the office and starts interfering with the life of anyone who opens it and reads a page. Four stories, four readers. Between them they sketch the calculations and appetites of people in present-day Russia. Mikhail Segal uses the episodic structure for satire, letting each section try a different register and slide from the realistic into the absurd and then into something close to a thriller. What holds it together is the narrator's dryness and the manuscript itself: the idea that whatever gets read changes whoever reads it.
