What Freakscene: The Story of Dinosaur Jr. Is About
Philipp Virus's 2021 documentary is about the American independent rock band Dinosaur Jr. The three members came together in the eighties, broke up and started playing again years later. The subject is that break-up. J Mascis's reticence and his tension with Lou Barlow sit at the centre; the film does not turn this into a repaired story and shows that the three still do not quite understand each other. Kim Gordon and Bob Mould speak. Archive and concert footage are extensive. The tone is dry. Who it's for: viewers of independent rock history. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the band; the documentary explains little context.
