Free Guy

The finale of Shawn Levy’s film was shot once and then thrown out. Originally Guy raised the weapon Cable carries in Deadpool 2; the prop had shipped to Boston and the scene was already in the can. Once Disney bought Fox, a lightsaber, a Hulk fist and Captain America’s shield became available. Levy is explicit about what he liked most: Guy never fires a gun across the whole picture. That sentence explains the comedy. In a story set inside a shooter, the hero refusing the weapon is the joke itself, and a climax built from shield and blade is not a reference but the result of that rule. Two strands run through one hundred and fifteen minutes, one inside the game and one in an authorship dispute outside. The emotional weight sits outside, the invention inside, and the halves are not evenly matched. One practical note: shooting wrapped in summer 2019 but release waited for 2021. The streamers in cameo belong to that earlier moment online, so parts already read as period piece. This became the studio’s first pandemic title held in cinemas alone for forty five days. Who it’s for: anyone taking the hero’s refusal to shoot as the central joke and tolerating office scenes. Who it’s not for: viewers wanting artificial intelligence taken seriously.
