Ready Player One

Spielberg cut most references to his own films from the script to avoid the look of self celebration. What survived was not accidental: the DeLorean from Back to the Future and the Jurassic Park tyrannosaur, one of them a film he produced, not directed. They cleared only about eighty percent of the copyrighted material they wanted. The novel’s Blade Runner sequence became The Shining because the rights holders feared a clash with Blade Runner 2049, and Ultraman became The Iron Giant after a legal dispute. That swap produced the best twenty minutes here: the only place the film slows down and commits to one world. The Overlook was rebuilt by scanning a print of the original, with lift and corridor built physically. It is a real horror interlude inside a family adventure and can unsettle younger viewers. The novel’s first trial runs on arcade knowledge and recited dialogue; the film made it a street car race, which tells you what the adaptation valued. What matters for a decision: almost every emotional beat plays on an avatar face, and the film returns to the real world mainly for threat. Viewers who connect through acting will struggle. The live action was shot in Birmingham, England, standing in for Columbus, Ohio. Spielberg called it his hardest film since Saving Private Ryan.
