There is no arena this time; what replaces it is a media war. Most of the sets are shooting sets: the rebels make propaganda films, the Capitol broadcasts back, and how much of what Katniss feels is directed becomes the argument. What matters for a decision: the rescue operation that comes closest to an action climax happens largely off camera, watched from a screen alongside the characters. Anyone waiting for explosions should know that. The second structural fact concerns the lead. For most of the film Katniss is told what to wear, where to look and what to say. That is precisely the subject, but it leaves the hero passive, which is why the pacing draws complaints. Peeta, too, is seen almost entirely through television broadcasts. Splitting the third book in two was contested from the start, and Francis Lawrence admitted in 2023 that making people wait a year came across as disingenuous. The two Mockingjay films were shot back to back, and production moved from Atlanta to Paris and to the closed Tempelhof airport in Berlin. Philip Seymour Hoffman died during production, having completed most of his scenes, and the credits carry a dedication. Jennifer Lawrence did not want to sing the film’s song and cried on the day; it still reached the top twelve of the Billboard chart.
