Slumberland

Nemo loses her father at sea and enters the dream world of Slumberland, where she searches with a con artist called Flip for pearls that might bring him back. The source is Winsor McCay's early twentieth-century strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, a property cinema has kept trying and rarely managing to adapt. Here Nemo is a girl rather than a boy, played by Marlow Barkley in her first film, with Jason Momoa as Flip. Francis Lawrence directed on a 150 million dollar budget, shooting in Toronto from February to May 2021. Netflix released it on 18 November 2022, and it drew over a billion minutes viewed in its first week. Reviews were cold. Rotten Tomatoes has 40 percent of 42 critics positive, and the consensus accuses it directly of forsaking the spirit of the strips in favour of senseless spectacle. It took two Visual Effects Society nominations. Who it is for: children and families who want large-scale dream imagery. Who it is not for: readers of the original. There is real distance between the strip's strangeness and what this film does with it.
