Sonic the Hedgehog

The film you can watch is the product of a retreat. The first trailer, released on 30 April 2019, showed a hedgehog with human teeth, the reaction was severe, director Jeff Fowler announced three days later that the character would be rebuilt, and the opening moved from 8 November 2019 to 14 February 2020. Tyson Hesse, who directed the Sonic Mania Adventures shorts, led the redesign, working with modelling, fur and animation crews in Los Angeles, London and Vancouver. Fowler presented the delay as the way to get the work done without grinding the effects artists. What reaches the screen is a big-eyed character far closer to the game art. In story terms this is less a game adaptation than a buddy road comedy. Sonic shares nearly every scene with the small-town sheriff played by James Marsden, and the rings from the games are not collectibles but a portal device. Jim Carrey’s Robotnik performs in a separate register, close to his broad nineties comedies, and a good share of the jokes depends on tolerating it. For a viewer willing to take 99 minutes as a two-hander on the road. Not for one expecting the levels, the speed and the enemy designs of the games to appear on screen.
