Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers

Dan Gregor and Doug Mand wrote Akiva Schaffer’s film as a spiritual successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, built around how much animation had changed since 1988. Schaffer says he applied one rule to the cameos: nothing goes in unless it moves the story along or puts a button on a really good laugh. Roger Rabbit’s appearance at the start was drawn by one of the animators from the 1988 feature. The convention scene was first planned around Jar Jar Binks, swapped out for Ugly Sonic. For the villain the team first considered a grown-up Charlie Brown, then chose Peter Pan because licensing was easier. Sweet Pete’s fall from child stardom was read as a dark nod to Bobby Driscoll, who voiced the 1953 Peter Pan. Schaffer puts the animation budget at about an eighth of a big studio animated feature, and says it still ate half the total cost. Shooting in Los Angeles took 30 to 35 days. The film won Outstanding Television Movie at the 74th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Best Streaming Movie at the Hollywood Critics Association television awards. A good fit if you like working out which cartoon each half of a joke came from. Not for anyone who will find Disney needling its own history sour, or the Driscoll parallel uncomfortable.
