What Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme Is About
The documentary is about the improvised side of hip hop, the work of making rhyme on the spot. Different settings are recorded, from ciphers in the street to well known MC battles. Because improvisation is said once and then gone, it is rarely recorded, and that is exactly why the film builds a valuable archive. The account likens the tradition to the on the spot making of a preacher or of a jazz solo. The film’s case is that record companies put out an image tying hip hop to violence and money and that this is false; that case is the documentary’s own. Artists known and unknown talk about language, politics and belief. It was shot over more than seven years. Kevin Fitzgerald’s seventy one minute American documentary was completed in 2000.
