1947, Suchan. In this mining town near Vladivostok, exiles, convicts and Japanese prisoners still held in Siberia after the war live side by side. Valerka and Galya make up their own games in the town's mud and coal dust. The games grow more dangerous as they go, and so does the life the children are living. Vitali Kanevsky's film rests on his own childhood; he was born in this town in 1935. He made his first feature past the age of fifty, on a very small budget, and it won the first-film prize at Cannes in 1990. The telling does not make poverty beautiful. Black and white images and a camera in constant motion are the character of the film.
