What From Ground Zero Is About
This anthology is made of short films by twenty-two filmmakers living in Gaza. The project was initiated by the director Rashid Masharawi; participants were given equipment and a budget, and each made a film of between three and seven minutes. The films differ entirely in form. Some are documentary, some fiction, some animation; some show the bombardment directly, some look at an everyday detail and some take up the act of filming itself. The strength lies in that variety. No single narrative is built and no shared conclusion offered; the differences of tone between the pieces show that being in the same place does not produce one experience. Who it's for: those who can watch short film anthologies and direct testimony from war zones. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a many-sided account; the films look from a single position and images of destruction appear directly.
