What From Morning to Midnight Is About
Karlheinz Martin's 1920 silent film is adapted from Georg Kaiser's 1912 play and counts among the most extreme works of German Expressionism. A cashier in a small-town bank is woken to the power of money by the visit of a wealthy Italian woman, takes sixty thousand marks and runs to the big city, where he tries to find satisfaction in sport, love, politics and religion. Robert Neppach's designs reduce every location to a flat piece of cardboard with the name of the place pasted onto it, an abstraction that goes further than Caligari. German distributors would not touch it, its public premiere took place in Tokyo in 1922, and the print was considered lost for close to forty years.
