What Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler Is About

Doctor Mabuse runs a criminal organisation and steers both the stock exchange and the gambling tables through hypnosis and suggestion, changing identities at will and drawing his victims into the game with their own hands. That is how he takes the young millionaire Edgar Hull. State Prosecutor von Wenk, who goes after him, has almost nothing to work with. Fritz Lang’s two part film, running over four and a half hours, is a direct portrait of Weimar Germany under inflation: as money loses meaning, crime becomes a profession. Rudolf Klein-Rogge plays Mabuse.
