Made in 1915, silent, and seven hours long: a serial in ten episodes, not a film to watch in one sitting. Despite the title it has nothing to do with vampires; the Vampires are a criminal organisation running Paris for ransom. The journalist Philippe Guérande goes after them, and facing him are the Grand Vampire and Irma Vep. Irma Vep is an anagram of vampire, and the black bodysuit worn by Musidora, who played her, is one of the most copied images in cinema. Louis Feuillade shot it in the streets of the real Paris. The Surrealists adored it.
