What Judex Is About
An unscrupulous banker ruins a family, and a young man swears to make him answer for it; he takes on a cloaked, mysterious identity, calls himself Judex, punishes the guilty and shields the innocent. It is Louis Feuillade’s serial in twelve episodes, written with Arthur Bernède and produced by Gaumont. René Cresté, a star of the day, plays Judex, and Diana Monti is played by Musidora, who had caused a sensation as Irma Vep in Feuillade’s previous serial Les Vampires. The whole thing runs over five hours. It was a commercial success and Feuillade made a sequel the following year, La Nouvelle Mission de Judex. It is counted among the earliest masked-hero narratives in cinema.
