What The Testament of Dr. Mabuse Is About
A criminal held in an asylum writes continuously, and outside, crimes are committed that match his pages exactly. Fritz Lang builds it as a detective story while the actual idea underneath is contagion: can a mind keep operating without its own body? For a film made in the early years of sound it is unusually bold with audio, especially in the scenes where a voice arrives from behind a curtain. The Nazi government banned it and Lang left Germany soon after, and that history has permanently changed how its description of organised crime reads.
