What Front Page Woman Is About
The reporter Curt Devlin and his colleague Ellen Garfield are in love, but Curt believes women have no head for newspaper work and says as much to her face. When a murder occurs in the city the two go after the same story and try to get ahead of each other at every step; hiding a source, reaching a witness first, getting word out of the jury room all become ordinary moves. As the race goes on, what Ellen has to prove is not the truth of the story but that she can do the job. Michael Curtiz’s eighty two minute American film uses the fast talking arrangement of the newspaper comedies of the thirties and makes the rivalry the engine of the love story. Bette Davis plays Ellen and George Brent plays Curt, with Roscoe Karns and J. Carrol Naish in the cast. It was completed in 1935.
