What Funeral Parade of Roses Is About

The relationship between a young trans woman working in Tokyo's night life and a club owner, tracking the outline of an old Greek tragedy. Toshio Matsumoto refuses a straight narrative: real interviews, behind the scenes footage and experimental passages are cut into the fiction. It is one of the few documents to record the Japanese counterculture of the sixties from inside, which makes it separately valuable now. Its visual language influenced later cinema. The structure is scattered and some sections are deliberately hard to sit through.
