What Games People Play Is About
Jenni Toivoniemi's film takes place at a summer house. Old friends have arranged a surprise birthday party for Mitzi, who does not take the surprise well: she has just filed for divorce and all she wanted from the weekend was quiet. The tension rises further when her closest friend arrives with a new boyfriend, a Swedish film actor. The familiar setting and the old rituals pull the group quickly back into their younger selves, and between the games, the jokes and the drink, things nobody meant to say get said. The film does not resolve this into a scene of reckoning, leaving each of them to take their share of it quietly. It is a good example of recent Finnish drama about a group of friends.
