What Gaz Bar Blues Is About
Mr Brochu, whom his friends call the Boss, keeps a petrol station going as best he can and tries to stay cheerful whatever happens. Small disasters line up around the place: hold-ups, the big companies moving into the neighbourhood, and the fact that none of his sons wants to take the business on. Louis Bélanger sets the story in 1989, a year when the world was changing fast, and shows that change from the pumps rather than from the news. Serge Thériault won the Jutra for best actor, and the music, by the director’s brother Guy Bélanger, took the Jutra for best score. It also took the grand special jury prize at the Montreal World Film Festival, and twenty years later it was adapted for the stage in Quebec.
