What Genghis Blues Is About

The blind blues musician Paul Pena is best known for writing Jet Airliner. One night his shortwave radio brought him Tuvan throat singing, and he taught himself first to produce the sound and then the Tuvan language to go with it. What he could do impressed the Tuvan master Kongar-ol Ondar enough that Ondar invited him home, to the throat-singing competition held in 1995. Roko Belic’s documentary follows that journey, moving between English, Russian and Tuvan. The film is not really about an exotic curiosity; it is about a blind man learning a sound purely by ear, with no description to work from, and then carrying it thousands of miles. It premiered at Sundance in January 1999.
