What The Soul of a Man Is About
Wim Wenders takes the tension in the blues between the sacred and the profane and works it through three musicians: Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson and J. B. Lenoir. The film is part history and part personal pilgrimage, restaging the twenties and thirties with a hand cranked camera in silent film grammar, then cutting to rare archive and to present day performance. The songs come back in versions by Nick Cave, Lou Reed, Bonnie Raitt, Cassandra Wilson, Lucinda Williams, Los Lobos and many others. Laurence Fishburne narrates. It is one part of The Blues, the seven part series Martin Scorsese assembled.
