Pina

The film shows Pina Bausch's work for Tanztheater Wuppertal on stage and off it. There are sections from pieces including The Rite of Spring, Cafe Muller and Vollmond, and the dancers also perform alone or in pairs out in the city, on a tram, in a mine and across factory grounds. Wim Wenders directed. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on 13 February 2011. The story behind it is sad. Bausch died unexpectedly on 30 June 2009, during preproduction. Wenders cancelled the project; the dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal persuaded him to continue, and it became a work made in memory of Bausch and her choreography. It was shot in 3D, an unusual choice for a dance documentary at the time, meant to keep the depth of the movement from flattening out. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 95 percent from 106 reviews with an 8.3 average. It took 14.6 million dollars worldwide. It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 84th Academy Awards. Germany also submitted it for Best Foreign Language Film, where it reached the nine-film shortlist without being nominated. Who it is for: viewers who like contemporary dance and what a body can say. Who it is not for: anyone wanting to learn about Bausch's life. This is not a biography but the choreography itself.
