Genocide

The documentary sets out the mass murder the Nazi regime carried out against the Jews of Europe, building it from newsreels, photographs and animated sections. Part of the narration is read from the words of those who were killed, and footage from the liberation of a concentration camp is included. The film does not stop at recounting history; it ends with an open warning that antisemitism is rising again and that what happened can happen again. Arnold Schwartzman directed, and the film was made by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Orson Welles and Elizabeth Taylor narrated; Taylor said the recording shook her so badly that it gave her nightmares, and that she cried too much to finish in the first session and needed another day. It won the Academy Award for best documentary and was the first film about the Holocaust to receive it.
