What Germany: A Summer's Fairytale Is About
Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup and nobody expected much from the team. Sönke Wortmann got inside the camp: the bus journeys, the dressing-room talk, the jokes between training sessions, the silences before kick-off. He recorded the side Klinsmann had built changing over the course of the tournament, and the country's relationship with its own flag changing at the same time. The documentary drew an unexpected audience at home, because the subject was not only football. The camera sits beside Klinsmann, Löw, Kahn and Lehmann, but what it is really tracking is how a country's view of itself shifted inside a few weeks.
