Germany, 1939. Hans and Lene marry the day before the war begins and Hans is sent to the eastern front. Their daughter Anna is born during a bombing raid, the house is destroyed, and mother and child take shelter with relatives in Berlin. Hans survives the war but is not the man of 1939, and living together again turns out to be beyond both of them. Helma Sanders-Brahms wrote and directed, and the story is largely her family’s own: Lene stands for the director’s mother, and her own daughter plays the young Anna. The title comes from Bertolt Brecht’s poem of the same name. It screened in Berlin in February 1980, was nominated for the Golden Bear and set off a sharp argument; thirty minutes were then cut from it. What exists now is a restored version.
