What Gervaise Is About
Gervaise is a laundress in Paris with two children, left by her lover Lantier. In time she marries Coupeau, a roofer, who falls, is crippled, and turns to drink, which leaves the whole household on her. She opens her own laundry and tries to hold on. Then Lantier comes back, and makes friends with Coupeau. René Clément adapted Émile Zola's 1877 novel L'Assommoir. Maria Schell won best actress at Venice for Gervaise and the film was nominated for the foreign language Oscar. It is an unsentimental account of how poverty finishes a person off slowly, and it never asks for pity.
