What The Day and the Hour Is About
In occupied France, Thérèse Dutheil, a bourgeois Parisian woman, comes across an American pilot who has been shot down. She hides him from the Germans and then finds herself inside the secret line that will move him and two English airmen into neutral Spain. As the journey lengthens, an unexpected closeness grows between them. René Clément wrote the film with Roger Vailland and Andre Barret; Henri Decaë shot it and Claude Bolling wrote the music. It tells the resistance story not through heroism but through an ordinary woman being drawn in step by step. Simone Signoret plays Thérèse and Stuart Whitman the American captain, with Michel Piccoli and Geneviève Page alongside, in a French-Italian co-production.
