What Mr. Orchid Is About
Directed by René Clément from a screenplay and dialogue written by its star, Noël-Noël, this is set in the Charente under occupation. Édouard Martin is an insurance agent and a former officer, to all appearances a family man who keeps out of everything, his attention apparently divided between his orchid greenhouse and the card table at the café. In fact he runs the resistance network for the whole region. His wife and son know nothing about it. The nerve of the film is that it tells the resistance not as an epic of heroism but as an everyday life open to comedy, a tone French cinema would take years to return to. It was one of the films made to get the industry back on its feet after the Liberation, and it went to Cannes in 1946.
