Ghajini

The story of a man who loses his memory every fifteen minutes. Sanjay owns a large company. After a blow to the head during an attack he cannot retain anything new. The only way to hold information is to write it: he has tattoos made on his body, keeps notes, writes names on photographs. Who he is looking for is clear: the man who killed Kalpana. Kalpana was an advertising model who claimed as a joke to be Sanjay's fiancée; how they met and what followed is told in flashback. The two halves carry two different registers. The flashbacks move like romantic comedy; the present-day sections are a hard revenge story. It is a remake of a film made earlier in Tamil, which was itself inspired by an American film built on memory loss. Aamir Khan rebuilt himself physically for the part and that look was much discussed at the time. Asin and Jiah Khan are in the cast. A. R. Murugadoss directed. The film reached one of the highest box office figures in India up to that point. One of the period's biggest productions for anyone who likes Indian action cinema and revenge stories. Before you watch, know this: the film is long and the violence is harsh.
